Last November, I got a message from a mom asking if I had any Santa photo openings left. By the time she reached out, Santa time slots were all full, and the moms who'd booked back in July and August had already had their sessions and were waiting on their galleries. I felt terrible telling her no. That conversation is exactly why I now talk about Santa session bookings starting in summer, because the moms who plan ahead get to relax and know the magic is already on the calendar. The ones who wait get whatever's left, if anything.

When Should i actually Book my Santa Session
The short answer is anywhere from July to October, with earlier booking giving you the best pick of slots. Here's how the timeline actually works.
My Santa Sessions open for registration July 25th (Christmas in July). I give the previous year's Santa clients the chance to book first, then an hour later open it up to everyone on my email list. A few days later, I open it up to everyone else! As you can imagine, spots begin to fill quickly! Because there are so many factors that go into planning Santa Minis, this is not a session that allows for adding additional dates and times later.
I know many moms don't begin to think about Santa Sessions until early December but by then, mine have already wrapped and galleries have already been delivered. This gives my clients plenty of time to use their photos for Christmas cards, Christmas gifts, photo ornaments and photo decor.

What Does the Best Time Slot Actually Mean?
This can look different depending on your family and the ages of your children. For those with younger kids, first-of-the-day slots tend to work best. For those with slightly older kids who need a slower start, mid-morning slots often work better. Consider ages of siblings when selecting your time slot.
If you want my personal recommendation on the best time slots, I have two. #1 - the 3rd or 4th time slot - the reason? Santa, Mrs. Claus and I have had a chance to warm up and get a rhythm. We're all still fresh! It's just a good time in my opinion. #2 - the last time slot - I know, I know. This seems to contradict what I just said about being fresh. Hear me out. By the last time slot, we've had a chance to see what works best and develop some new strategies. You're getting all the best ideas of the day for documenting sweet moments with Santa.
Here's the good news. All the time slots are the best one - going to book and realizing you miss out is the worst! If you are on the Email List, you're in the best position to access session times as soon as they become available to book!

How Do Santa Photos Fit into the Christmas Card Timeline?
When I schedule Santa photos, I consider my clients' Christmas card timeline. I know that clients need their edited gallery so they have enough time to order Christmas cards, receive them and mail them to friends and family. This year's Santa sessions will take place Saturday, November 7, 2026 and my goal will be to have everyone's galleries sent within two weeks.

Book Your Santa Photoshoot Before Sessions Sell Out
Booking Santa photos between July and October isn't about being early for the sake of it. It's about getting the slot that actually works for your family, having your gallery back in time for Christmas cards, and giving yourself the kind of December where the photos are the easy part instead of one more thing on the list. The families who look most relaxed in December are almost always the ones who got this checked off in summer or early fall.
I want clients to know the importance of booking early because I hate having to tell families that I'm already fully booked. I don't want that to happen to anyone!

FAQ

What is the best age for santa photos?
This experience truly is perfect for all ages. Yes, it is possible babies or toddlers may cry, but Santa and I have a few tricks up our sleeve! The magical "believe" years go by so fast so whether your child smiles perfectly or sheds a few tears, you'll be glad to have it documented.
what should the kids wear?
Once you’re booked, I’ll send over a curated style guide that even includes direct links in case you are shopping! Think classic pajamas, velvet bows, or soft neutrals. We want the focus on the faces and the feeling, not a busy outfit.
What if my child is ...well, terrified?
It happens! My Santa and Mrs. Claus are pros at the "slow approach." We have plenty of tricks up our sleeve to make them feel safe. Sometimes the most "real" moments come from a shy wave from across the room, and those portraits are often the most precious.
What if life happens and we need to cancel?
I get it—toddlers get the sniffles and schedules go sideways. Because these sessions are so limited and typically sell out, the session fee is non-refundable to hold your spot. However, if you can’t make it, you are more than welcome to "gift" or sell your spot to a friend! Just send me a quick note so I know whose smiling faces to expect and they will need to sign my contract as well. If I have a frantic family on the waitlist ready to jump in, I’ll always do my best to help you make a match!

Can't wait to see your family for this magical experience!
xoxo, Katie + Santa

Hi! I'm Katie

I am a wife and mother to two boys. When I am not taking photos of families, I am likely cheering on my boys at a sporting event. In addition to photography, I love music and traveling!
I worked in nonprofit for many years before venturing into photography full-time. During that time, I worked with both blind Oklahomans at NewView Oklahoma and children with critical illnesses at Make-A-Wish Oklahoma. My nonprofit experience has given me confidence working with children, of all ages and abilities which has proved to be useful in family photography.
I love capturing tender moments with a sweet newborn, the playfulness of a family session and the thrill and drama of an intense sporting event. As your Edmond + Oklahoma City Lifestyle Family, Newborn and Sports Photographer, I would love to help document all your important moments in life!
